Gentlemen.
About 1000 bronies, including mehself, now have a new team fortress 2 spray. Saw a pyro wit a flare gun shooting it, typin “SHOOT DA PONIE”. Switched to other team demoman and chopped his head off. Camped next to it and killed him about 10 times.
It’s a kids cartoon.
If you are an 8-year old girl, this is probably your first “villain laughing during a thunderstorm” And we all remember our first villains laughing during a thunderstorm. Ah-h-h *swoons*
Now if you are a 30-year old male, you have to suck it up and imagine that you are an 8-year old girl for a moment.
While I agree that it DOES still have a target demographic of younger girls, it has also drawn in some younger boys as well. It’s the slapstick violence, plus the goofy humor. Those are two of the selling points to the older crowd as well, and I think abandoning the ‘kid friendly’ would be a huge mistake.
With that in mind, the ‘lightning crash’ shot is a classic villain shot. It’s menacing without being *too* menacing for kids. I’d love to see them come up with a new one, and I think they could pull it off, but I think we need to see them pull off a season *equal* to the first one before they try to *better* it.
All that said, ‘kid friendly’ does not need to mean ‘uncreative’ or ‘super-sanitized’. If anything, the huge popularity of the first season should show that intelligent kids humor can pull kids in just as quickly as ‘glory in stupidity’ shows. It might be interesting to have them do something about at the level of ‘Past Sins’ for a multi-ep show, or maybe a movie special.
Heck, I’d pay money dollars for them to just do ‘Past Sins’.
So let me get this straight…
Older males like a show even though it was originally intended for little girls. Now that these older males like the show, you expect them to change it to fit this new audience, despite the fact that they started to like it for what it was.
What do you want them to do, a scream face?
Might be a bit too graphic for little girls/
Besides not like they remember the lightning, only older fans are as picky as this kinda things.
I still loved it, so if you don’t like that some things happen again, don’t watch and leave us pegasisters and bronies alone.
Or else I will have to throw cupcakes at you…
If you think about it all the characters and plots are archetypical (and yes, I did just make that up.) They’ve all been done to death, several times over. If you’ve lived in the western world for any significant amount of time these should be easily identifiable and can simply seem monotonous. But, as Deli points out, if you’re a young child and this is the first time you’ve experienced the archetype, then the affect is significant, because of the nature of the archetype. If you’re outside the target audience then it’s probably best that you take it in stride. It’s not Faust’s fault if you glean something different from the show because you’re too old to be watching kids’ shows.
Actually, you didn’t make that up, but you did explain a good portion of it pretty well.
Short version – MOST stories can be fit into one of about four ‘Ur-Stories’, and the ONLY thing that makes ‘good ones’ stand out is execution, not originality.
that’s why the show is still awesome, they make a kids show which is actually exciting for grown males to watch too. i don’t care how they did it but it’s awesome and magically friendly
I can see a Celestia/Luna re-friendship uber-tastic something happening. Call it a hunch. I’m not totally certain it’s going to happen, but i’m thinking it might.
I agree with Episode 1 from Season 1. But Season 2′s Episode 1 got me a good laugh and made me a new favorite villian. I can actually have a favorite villian!
This is not being unoriginal, this is doing things according to the rules. Each artform as it’s rules and codes. When you’re in a Fantastic-Adventure setting, the villain MUST have his evil-laugh-with-background-lightning sequence or else the whole thing would feel incomplete.
What makes MlP : FiM so awesome is that, as cliche some sequence might appear, they do it RIGHT. Even if we’ve seen this dozens of times before we still get caught into the story because it’s written and acted with actual talent.
I recall a TS trollface a few pages back, uploaded before the episode aired, trying to convince us that the plot of Return of Harmony was just a complete rehash of the first two-parter. Whoops.
OP is equally accurate, because if you generalize two things enough, they will finally become so similar* that you’ll be able to dance around shrieking LOOK WAT I FOUND I’M A GENIUS I’M A GENIUS, just like those sad little Forever Alone Guys that pour through an episode frame by frame looking for single-frame goofs that they can grab and proceed to scream about like a howler monkey that sat on a hot poker.
The hilarious thing is, some of them love the show but they’re trying (applejack) SO VERY HARD (/applejack) to ruin it for themselves.
The others are just trolls.
Pft.
*Go ahead, apply this process to any set of Batman stories–comic, movie, cartoon, whatever. Or Transformers. Or anything else. It still works: break it down to its basic elements and it’s suddenly, um, broken down to its basic elements. WOW R U A GOD? No.
Well, she *IS* more than a year older, and she *IS* late high school / early college age. As a high school teacher, I can tell you that both young women and young men change VERY quickly at that age.
princess Luna should be able to transform into and back from Nightmare moon at will. that would make for an awesome fight sequence with any villain. (insert 3 part episode somewhere in the 2nd season..)
I thought the exact same thing.
Weird.
if it ain’t broke…
Hit it with a wrench anyways.

Do you remember the screen name? Cuz that kinda sounds like my little bro.
Generic ‘villain laughing evilly with lightning behind them’ for the loss…
I found it rather ELECTRIFYING myself.
No. There are no excuses for that level of jumping-the-sharkness.
It’s a kids cartoon.

Problem solved.
They know how many older males watch the show now.
Besides, they already did it in the first season.
but they still MAKE it for the kids, so get over it.
Faust.

Ooohhh, something Dark and Edgy!
… Like Batmane.

Older males like a show even though it was originally intended for little girls. Now that these older males like the show, you expect them to change it to fit this new audience, despite the fact that they started to like it for what it was.
Yeah, that makes a great deal of sense.
What do you want them to do, a scream face?
Might be a bit too graphic for little girls/
Besides not like they remember the lightning, only older fans are as picky as this kinda things.
If we CONTINUE on like this, we may SPARK a comment stack.
This is quite SHOCKING indeed.
well…it IS a kids programe…
Alright, who is even a little bit surprised? Mind you, this is still a cartoon. A cartoon with generic villains and a generic plot.
I still loved it, so if you don’t like that some things happen again, don’t watch and leave us pegasisters and bronies alone.

dont worry only 2 days left before derpy hooves save them
Too bad Luna was banished to season 3, maybe she could help out.

Question is will there be another “fabulous” serpent again? XD
We will find out….
SOON o.O
it’s sooooooooooooooooo true!
What a world!
Oohoohoohoohoo~! My mustache!
The only difference for this time around is that I don’t see how they’re going to get themselves out of this mess.
Through the magic of friendship. Duh.
But in what way?
What I’m trying to say is, they seem pretty screwed over.
In a magical friendly way!
Sure, let’s go with that.
that’s why the show is still awesome, they make a kids show which is actually exciting for grown males to watch too. i don’t care how they did it but it’s awesome and magically friendly
They made the show with the elements of harmony and epicness.
I can see a Celestia/Luna re-friendship uber-tastic something happening. Call it a hunch. I’m not totally certain it’s going to happen, but i’m thinking it might.
People like repetition and hate change.
Cleaver things make people feel stupid, and unexpected things make people feel scared
lol futurama reference
Did everything just taste purple for a second?
Twilight looking worried……really? What? Was she supposed to look excited?
They probably needed another similarity and that was the only other one they could find. Either that or they’re just a jerk.
season 2 is more drastic
and oh, you should do this too on both episode 2 of both season
So they’re the same…whoop dee doo. We still love the Season 2 premiere for what it was. No use calling out on it if we think its good as is.
I don’t want to sound heretic but… both first episodes are so-so. i won’t recommend those episodes.
I agree with Episode 1 from Season 1. But Season 2′s Episode 1 got me a good laugh and made me a new favorite villian. I can actually have a favorite villian!
Anyone wanna bet that he’ll get shuffled off after the next episode? They made a big deal about Luna and where has she been, hmm?
I think she was in that episo- no wait…what the time she…no, damn.
unless they go for a 3 parter or feature Dischord in the last episode of the season I don’t reckon they’ll show him again after this next episode.
It will probably be that on the 3rd episode though they go back to normal and start a back-story to the season, such as the gala was for season 1

Forgot “Cue happy credits music”
There’s only one thing lacking from Season 1, episode 1
…
PINK-MEOWING-INSIDE-OUT UMBRELLA!
Oh, gawd, I love that umbrella.
Is it just me or does Twilight look a lot older?
Well, she *IS* more than a year older, and she *IS* late high school / early college age. As a high school teacher, I can tell you that both young women and young men change VERY quickly at that age.
Discord needs to teach Nightmare Moon how evil is SUPPOSED to be done!!
Actually, Nightmare Moon needs to come back, this time as the *good* guy, since she’s got a *worse* guy to fight against!
My Little AntiHero!
princess Luna should be able to transform into and back from Nightmare moon at will. that would make for an awesome fight sequence with any villain. (insert 3 part episode somewhere in the 2nd season..)
Have you read Past Sins? Definitely worth the read.
